Week of Action begins June 20
Each summer, United Ways across the country celebrate the longest day of the year with a nationwide day of volunteer service.
This year, the United Way of the River Cities is expanding its volunteer opportunities with the 2022 Week of Action. Week of Action will be June 20-25 and include volunteer projects at various funded partner sites throughout the UWRC five-county service area.
“United Way of the River Cities is known and valued for the connections we create between those in need and those who can help,” said Carol Bailey, UWRC Executive Director. “This year’s Week of Action is a great example of this, as we’re coordinating opportunities for volunteers to support projects that will assist eleven different area non-profits in meaningful ways.”
Volunteer registration is now open at www.unitedwevolunteer.org
This year’s opportunities include:
- Monday, June 20 or Wednesday, June 22: Harvest for the Hungry Food Pantry — Food distribution;
- Tuesday, June 21: Facing Hunger Foodbank — Painting a mural;
- Tuesday, June 21 or Wednesday, June 22: Community Mission Outreach — Helping remove items from cooler, installing insulation in cooler;

In addition to these date-specific volunteer opportunities, there are also ways to participate during Week of Action right from your home or place of work. Shelter organizations such as the Huntington City Mission, Southwestern Community Action’s Mason County Shelter, Branches Domestic Violence Shelter and others are in need of hygiene kits for families and individuals.
For this project, volunteers are asked to purchase hygiene supplies from a provided list and build kits. Bags for the kits will be provided by United Way of the River Cities. Instructions for the kits are available at the point of registration.
“Volunteerism is at the heart of our society,” said W. Brent Sturm, UWRC Volunteer Engagement. “Most of us can give money, a few of us can give a lot of money, but all of us can give of our time to make the River Cities a better place to call home.”
Registration is required for these volunteer opportunities. More details on each activity, including hygiene kits lists and locations and times for in-person volunteer events, can be found at www.unitedwevolunteer.org.
