HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — United Way of the River Cities has released its 2025 Community Needs Assessment, providing an in-depth look at the region’s greatest challenges and opportunities across its six-county service area in West Virginia and Ohio.
The assessment, released the UWRC’s recent Community Leaders Congress, highlights key findings in the areas of financial security, youth opportunity and healthy communities. Nearly half of households in the region are struggling to meet basic needs, with single female-headed households and minority families disproportionately impacted. Youth face barriers to education, healthcare access and economic stability, while chronic disease, mental health challenges and housing insecurity remain critical issues for community health.
“This report underscores what so many families are experiencing every day – the cost of living continues to rise, and too many are being left behind,” said Jedd Flowers, UWRC’s executive director. “We are using these findings to guide meaningful solutions and partnerships that will create long-term impact for the people we serve.”
Join a Community Task Force to Create Solutions
To address the issues identified in the assessment, United Way of the River Cities is launching community task forces focused on:
- Workforce Readiness
- Childcare
- Transportation
These task forces will bring together local leaders representing all sectors of the economy, including business, economic development, healthcare, education, government and faith-based and nonprofit organizations. Most meetings will include a Zoom option, and calendar invitations will be sent directly to those who RSVP. Community members are encouraged to sign up for one or more task force to be part of creating solutions that drive lasting change.
