United Way of the River Cities is pleased to announce Mountain Health Network has donated more than $83,000 as a result of its annual workplace campaign and other gifts. The support generously comes from corporate donations and pledges from employees of Cabell Huntington Hospital, St. Mary’s Medical Center, Pleasant Valley Hospital and HIMG.

United Way of the River Cities has announced the recipients of the 2022 Big Cover Up awards. The Big Cover Up started about 20 years ago as a way for local schools in Cabell, Lincoln, Mason and Wayne counties in West Virginia, and Lawrence County, Ohio, to apply for a match-based grant to help fund school projects that serve fellow students in need.

At 6 p.m. on Sept. 20 at St. Mary’s Center for Education, volunteers from the community will create Family Emergency Preparedness Starter Kits with sample supplies needed in emergencies, and guidance for how to create and practice a disaster preparedness plan.

The United Way of the River Cities has awarded $525,880 in grants to 26 nonprofits in its five-county service area for the 2022-23 funding cycle. These grants target critical issues in the areas of health, education, financial stability and safety net services by investing in local programs managed by nonprofits that work to solve these issues in Cabell, Lincoln, Mason and Wayne counties in West Virginia, and Lawrence County, Ohio.

During the 2022 filing season, 2,473 returns were prepared through the VITA program. More than $3.3 million in federal refunds were received by local taxpayers using the service. Individuals and families who took part in the VITA program this year received more than $835,000 in Earned Income Tax Credits, and more than $755,000 in Child Tax Credits.
