As tax season reaches its peak, United Way of the River Cities is making a final push to encourage eligible individuals and families to take advantage of free tax preparation services offered through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
With the April 15 tax filing deadline looming, the United Way of the River Cities is urging those who haven’t filed their taxes yet to make their appointment by calling its offices at 304-523-8929 and select option 3.
The VITA program provides free tax preparation assistance to individuals and families with low to moderate incomes, helping them navigate through the complexities of tax season and maximize their refunds. This year, there are 10 VITA sites throughout Cabell, Mason, Lincoln and Wayne counties.
“Our goal at United Way of the River Cities is to ensure that everyone in our community has access to quality tax preparation services, regardless of their income level,” said Jedd Flowers, executive director at United Way of the River Cities. “By utilizing the VITA program, individuals and families can save money on tax preparation fees and potentially qualify for valuable tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit.”
The VITA program is staffed by IRS-certified volunteers who undergo rigorous training to provide accurate and reliable tax assistance. These volunteers are equipped to handle a variety of tax situations, including basic tax returns and self-employment income.
