The story of your United Way began with the Huntington Women’s Club. The goal was to combine programs which overlapped and develop new programs that addressed unmet needs. The Community Chest was established in July of 1922 to be the fundraising arm for these efforts.

One hundred years later, United Way of the River Cities envisions a community where everyone has the tools and opportunity to thrive. It is our mission to connect our community with resources to reduce poverty and improve live.

We do this in the five counties we serve – Cabell, Lincoln, Mason and Wayne counties in West Virgina and Lawrence County, Ohio:

  • by providing funds through a competitive grant process to more than two dozen programs that work in the areas of health, education, financial stability, and basic needs;
  • by coordinating United Way  programs and coalitions that work through local schools, community centers and businesses to connect people and bridge resources;
  • by convening local leaders to address needs and connect resources to improve services to those in the River Cities;
  • by connecting local nonprofits with needed volunteers;
  • by connecting people like YOU, who want to make a difference.

As you can see, we’ve changed over the years to address the challenges of a changing world. But one thing has remained the same: our focus on improving lives and strengthening communities.

How will YOU help build the next 100 years?

We thank all of the generous donors, volunteers, and partners who have invested in opportunities to grow good in the communities we serve. But we know the work is not done.

Join us as we focus on reducing poverty throughout the River Cities, and strengthening our community for the long term.
